    5 Tips For Motorcycle Maintenance

    Motorcycle Maintenance

Motorcycles are a symbol of freedom. Unlike the steel cage of a traditional automobile, motorcycles let you experience the velocity and exhilaration of the open road. It may surprise owners to find, however, that this freedom comes at the cost of diligent and careful maintenance. This includes not only sticking to the maintenance schedule recommended by the manufacturer, but making periodic check-ups by yourself. While you cannot control the vagaries of the highway, you can ensure that your bike is operating at peak efficiency by following these 5 tips:

    1. Apply Lubricants
In addition to the cables, apply lubricants to the stand, brake pedal, shifter and various other parts on your motorcycle. These areas are susceptible to a build up of crust and road grime on your bike as they are constantly moving in and out of position. Take the time to periodically remove this debris and burnish the parts with a fresh coat of grease. An ideal time to do this is in the winter, especially for individuals who ground their bikes for months due to the harsher weather.

    2. Utilizing a Torque Wrench
One commonly overlooked tip for maintaining your motorcycle is tightening loose fasteners. Every time you ride your bike, you subject it to vibrations that occur through constant contact with the road. This in turn will gradually loosen the parts on your motorcycle. While these vibrations may be imperceptible to the rider, over the long term they can affect the performance and safety of your bike. Check the user manual for instructions on how to properly apply torque to loose fasteners.

    3. Battery Checks
Motorcycle riders are about freedom, and to an extent, recklessness. This is why one of the most basic tips for motorcycle maintenance is also one of the most frequently ignored. Remember to keep a close watch on the battery’s charge whenever you fill the unsealed chambers with distilled water. Hook the battery up to a charger during protracted periods of non-use. Make sure to clean any corrosion from the top of the battery if applicable. It is a good idea to purchase a battery cleaning tool designed for scrubbing terminals and connectors to ensure proper safety.

    4. Checking Tire Tread
Regardless of whether your ride has two wheels or four, proper tire inflation is common knowledge. Proper inflation increases mileage, saves fuel, and lessens wear and tear. It also shortens braking periods and adds to safety. This is especially critical for motorcycle owners due to the increased damage that can be caused by an accident. Make sure that your bike maintenance includes an evaluation of the tire tread. According to most experts, a tread depth of 1 to 2mm indicates the tires should be replaced. If your tires have been under-inflated for an extended period of time, it’s likely they have already surpassed the recommended usage period.

    5. Bleeding Brakes
Generally, motorcycle maintenance guides suggest bleeding the breaks once every 2 years. This is more of general suggestion and may not be applicable to your particular bike. For instance, if you notice your brake fluid is brown instead of transparent, it is time to purchase a bleeding kit. Adhere to the instructions listed on the bleeding kit and be sure to surround the area with old towels to quickly soak up any splashes.
